Headshot Prep: What to Wear

Simple tips to help you feel prepared, confident, and camera-ready!

Getting ready for your headshot session does not need to be complicated. The goal is to choose clothing and simple styling options that feel like you, photograph well, and give us enough variety to create strong images.

A few thoughtful choices can completely change the tone of your photos. Small details like neckline, layers, grooming, and hair changes can make a big difference.

How Many Looks Should You Bring?

For a mini-session, plan to bring 1–3 looks. We likely will not have time to photograph all three, but having options gives us flexibility if one look is working better than another.

For a regular headshot or modeling session, plan to bring 3–5 different looks. The goal is not to overpack, but to have enough variety to create a range of images that feel distinct.

For Men

  • Solid color shirts are always a strong choice.

  • If you are choosing between necklines, V-necks can often create a slightly more open and flattering look than crew neck shirts.

  • If you are wearing a collared shirt, make sure the collar has some structure and is not laying flat against your chest.

  • Well-fitted clothing photographs better than anything too oversized or too tight.

  • Stay away from giant logos or bold graphics on clothing.

  • If you are planning to shave or change your facial hair between looks, please let me know beforehand so we can plan your session accordingly.

Bonus Tip for Men

If you are open to it, a light makeup application can photograph really well. It can help even out skin tone and reduce shine under lighting. Feel free to reach out to a local makeup artist ahead of time if you want a clean, natural look for your session.

For Women

  • Solid colors are always a great option.

  • The neckline of your top can dramatically change the style of your image. Crew necks, V-necks, tanks, and scoop necks can each create a very different feel on camera.

  • Layering pieces like jackets, cardigans, or overshirts can help create multiple looks without needing a full outfit change.

  • Bringing a hair tie or claw clip is a simple way to create a quick hairstyle change during your session.

  • Switching up your hairstyle, even slightly, can help create more variety in your final images.

Bonus Tips for Women

  • Consider makeup that is natural, polished, and just a little more defined than your everyday look.

  • Moisturized skin and lips make a noticeable difference on camera.

  • Bring one outfit that feels like your safe option, something you already know you feel confident wearing.

General Tips

  • Solid colors tend to photograph best and keep the focus on your face.

  • Avoid large logos, busy graphics, or anything overly distracting.

  • You do not need to bring a huge wardrobe. A few strong options are usually more than enough.

  • Bring a few options if you are unsure. It is always easier to narrow things down once you are here.

  • Please bring clothing options on hangers and wrinkle free so everything is ready to go when your session starts.

  • The goal is not perfection. The goal is variety, confidence, and authenticity.
